Juniors Journal: Week of May 13

With dusk descending on Alto and a chill in the air, the 17-game Juniors regular season title was still hanging impossibly in the balance! In fact, headed into the final week not one of the 6 final positions (and tournament seeds) had been decided. There was even a chance of a 3-way tie for 3-4-5 trending toward a coin flip.

Pirates Alex Radics, Nico Rocherolle, and Colton Zinn took the helm as managers with Arden Shapiro clipboard in hand as coach and muscle. The Pirates took the lead in the bottom of the 6th and earned the W over the Mets 16-8 and with that, the top spot over the second place Giants. With Austin Miller and Raymond Cao, these 14U Pirates 2.0 achieved a rare repeat upping their 2-year win total in black pants to 26 and making good on the team’s anthem, AC/DC’s Back In Black.

They were aided mightily by their skillful 13Us including Tommy Hockin, James Cerchiai, William Palmer, and Zander Ting who all had multi-hit games.

The game concluded an epic day of roses and mom’s, sausages and peppers, majors and bubble gum with sunshine until nearly the very end!

Perhaps no bigger moment in the season came as the Orioles battled the Red Sox when JP Peavy turned on a 3-2 pitch from Theo Adam and sent it to Edna McGuire for a Grand Slam!
