Juniors Journal: April 8 2024

Last week was the countdown to spring break — a familiar pattern of action and a round of wet weather.

In Monday night’s April Fool’s game, the Giants edged the Orioles 4-2.  After grabbing the lead in the 4th inning the Giants completed their solid pitching when Ethan “Yes I” Cann slammed the door fanning 5 in 2 innings of work.  The O’s Oliver Watkins notched his first Juniors base hit. The result has apparently put the TikTok sponsorship for the new stadium in doubt. O’s Manager John McDonnell left the field in his signature helmet refusing comment on that subject or rumors that one of his coaches has signed on with Jockey for a new ad campaign.

Tuesday, the Mets had more of their talented defense on display as they sent the Pirates packing 11-3.  With Juniors Sore Arm Fever going around, the Pirates gave up another 13 walks against just 2 hits -- by Raymond Cao and James Cerchiai.  Arden Shapiro looked stone cold in an inning of work fanning 2 and nabbing the 3rd out unassisted.  The Mets hit up and down the order with a pair from Connor StewartFinn Reilly nearly knocked one out to right center and Maxwell Lee stole first with a the best bunt of the year.

The Orioles bats woke up on Wednesday but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Red Sox who prevailed 9-6. Ty Cerne drove in Mateo Hernandez to put the O’s up 2-1 in the 5th. Gael O’Brien followed with a double and the O’s sat 4-1. But the Red Sox struck back in the bottom half capitalizing on a series of walks and a clutch double by Theo Adam to put them up 5-4. Amidst the chaos the O’s turned a pretty 1-2-3 double play Murphy-McDonnell-Hernandez.  Apparently, one of the few immune to a sore arm, Miller Weir threw 5 gritty innings for the Sox. Tenzin Mak and Julian MacColl combined to score 4 runs.

Thursday evening the rains returned and postponed the Giants vs Cardinals.

In District play this week, TPLL Tigers continued to pummel Mill Valley — this time trouncing the Giants 18-3. Cillian Flahive had the Giants lone 2 hits in defeat.  The Mets game against WMLL was rained out.

Gio Perez hits a Grand Slam!

Short Porch mania took over Alto on the first day of break with nearly 30 kids showing up in a rainbow of MVLL practice jerseys for a mix-it-up game with the fences way in! Gio Perez launched a big fat Grand Slam to get things going.  But that was just the beginning — James Cerchiai was a triple short of the cycle and sent a HR into orbit. Big Nate Lee had a double and a bomb. The only hot dog was the one that got loose on the field.  Lots of fun with 25 runs scored and as many smiles to match.

Saturday, in Alumni news, Sam Goldberg (MVLL 2023) had a spectacular day for the Tam Freshman Hawks going 3-4 with 5 RBIs and 2 doubles.
