Juniors Journal: Week of April 22

We have the least amount of drought state-wide in almost 15 years and that means Alto is in spectacular shape — green now ringed with the blue fence and no shortage of excitement between the lines!

On Tuesday, the Mets evened the season series with the Orioles courtesy of a 16-3 drubbing. The O’s coughed up 19 walks in 5 innings to the collective SMH of their fans. Weston Kellogg had 2 hits and 2 RBIs and JP Peavy added a hit and RBI in defeat. For the Mets, Finn Reilly had a pair of knocks and 3 RBIs. Liam Winn batted in a run with a hit as well.

Wednesday, the Pirates Raymond CaoNico Rocherolle, and Cedra Crews combined for the no-no-no-hit shutout as they led an 8-0 win over the Giants. The Pirates were aided by stellar error-free play in the field including gems by Arden ShapiroAustin Miller and Zander Ting.  Nash Benford pitched 2 solid innings for the Giants.

Red Sox vs Redbirds had the game of the week Thursday as the Sox staged a 4-run rally in the 7th inning to win 6-5. Oliver Churcher delivered a clutch single with two strikes to drive in Scottie Shaw and Sammy Marcus to put his team ahead.  ed Sox pitching was led by starter Heath Hochanadel and closer Miller Weir who each logged 4 Ks.  Gio Perez continued to mash with two hits including a double. The Cards were bolstered by great pitching from Roberto Santo DomingoTommy Strong, and a heroic 83-pitch effort from Nolan Ward.

Saturday was a gorgeous sunny affair at Alto with pastries and coffee from Le Marais, roving packs of middle schoolers chatting up Snack Shack concession workers and a ton of baseball. The morning started with the Pirates holding on for an 8-5 win against the resilient Sox.  Theo Adam pitched 2 2/3 and had a hit on his 14th birthday.  Pirates Alex Radics launched his second HR of the season into right center. He scored 3 times and in the field was part of 2 double plays both coming with the bases loaded.

The Giants handled a depleted Mets team 14-4 paced by a barrage of hits including a pair each from Bradley Marshall, Erickson Kenyon and Seamus Mauer.  There is an APB out for Jacob DiPippa — “theft” of 3 bases and “obstruction of offense” in 2+ innings on the mound.

The Cardinals Henry Dahlman appeared to be putting in bids for gold gloves at multiple positions when making putouts all over the diamond and helping secure a 10-6 win over the Orioles. In need of a pool player, the Cards picked up Pirates Nico Rocherolle who went 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs including a double that one-hopped the fence and the first Juniors switch hit — a lefty RBI single.  Tommy Strong added 2 hits and scored 3 runs. Philip Walker had a hit and RBI as did Curren Glynn. For the Orioles, JP Peavy launched a double and had a pair of hits and RBIs. Noah Schick added 2 more in a losing cause and pitched a clean inning to keep the O’s close.

Sunday, the Giants and Cardinals were back out to complete a suspended game from March with the Giants winning 13-4.  Both Gavin Bailey and Henry Dahlman made their debut efforts from the mound. The two teams followed that with a tense low-scoring battle where the Giants led 3-2 in the 6th before going on to win 6-3. Bradley MarshallEthan Cann and Nash Benford shouldered the pitching load combining for 8 Ks. Cards Tianu Koss and Feddy Tellez pitched well. Dane Eberhart pitched his first Juniors inning coming on in relief with the bases loaded and recording 3 straight outs!

In District play, the Cardinals played a very solid 3 innings in Tiburon keeping the game close before the floodgates opened as TPLL Tigers went on to a 15-0 win. In Fairfax, the Orioles upended the WMLL Giants 6-3 thanks to Ty Cerne’s complete game 11 K gem. Cerne helped his cause with a pair of hits. Will Weir was back doing Will Weir things — 2 hits, 4 stolen bases and 3 runs scored.
