Post-spring break action is underway and this week’s full slate of action will close out April and bring us closer to the halfway point of the season. In the Majors, the Rays (5-1) lead the pack with the Giants (4-2) and Tigers (3-2) close behind. In the Minors, the Mariners (6-1) lead the Rangers (5-3) by a game and a half. In Minors AAA, the Royals (6-0) are setting the pace, with the Cardinals (7-1) right in the mix.
MAJORS
Rays 3, Red Sox 0 —Rays pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout with Beckett Glynn pitching three innings, Teddy Klaassen two and August Gottlieb closing it. Glynn added two hits for the Rays, Henry Ellis had an RBI single and Arlo Williams and Thomas Gougion made stellar plays in the outfield to keep the Red Sox from scoring.
For the Red Sox, Cole Swift and Jack Payne surrendered only four hits and struck out seven Rays batters in five innings.
Tigers 12, Reds 6 — Kadin Mokari led the Tigers with two hits and three RBIs while Levi Weber scored three times and tripled. Dylan Vanatta and Ryan Lynch each drove in two runs for the winners. Mokari whiffed six in two innings on the the hill, while Ricky Ames hurled two innings in just 19 pitches.
For the Reds, Graziano Cerchiai crushed a two-run home run over the right field fence to give the Reds an early lead in the first inning, only the second home run in Majors this season.
Giants 4, Yankees 3 — Evan Wolly and Reid Holbrook each stole home to provide the margin of victory in a close game. Wolly went 2-for-2 with an RBI to cap his big day, while Holbrook scored twice and Quinn Barnard knocked a single and scored. Brodie Williams reached base three times and tossed two innings of one-run ball, Holbrook fanned three in 1 1/3 innings and Rory Murphy hurled two innings with five whiffs to end it.
For the Yankees, Oscar Karlen struck out three in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Tigers 10, Yankees 7 — Jack Chaudhry, Kadin Mokari and Levi Weber each drove in two runs for the Tigers, with Weber hitting a triple. Ryan Lynch went 2-for-3 for the winners, while Chaudhry cruised through two spotless innings on 18 pitches.
For the Yankees, Sebastian Fals notched a 2-run double and Oscar Karlen provided the biggest highlight of the game with a gigantic 3-run blast over the left field fence, the first round-tripper of the Majors season.
Rays 8, Red Sox 3 — The Rays scored five runs in the last two innings to break open a tie game and had two hits apiece from August Gottlieb and Boden Medow. Beckett Glynn and Walker Yeagar each pitched two scoreless innings and Medow and Gottlieb also pitched for the Rays.
Jack Payne and Leo Tenenbown each had two hits for the Red Sox.
Giants 9, Reds 3 — Reid Holbrook hurled two scoreless innings with four strikeouts and collected two RBIs at the plate to lead the Giants. Fletcher Lucanic went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored, Jackson Blitzer knocked an RBI single and Quinn Barnard rapped an RBI single and scored two runs for the winners, who received three combined shutout innings from Gray Getty and Rory Murphy to close it out.
For the Reds, Hudson Wayne tossed two scoreless innings and Matthew Cao whiffed five in two innings. Cao went 2-for-3 at the plate.
MINORS
Mariners 7, Diamondbacks 3 — The Mariners broke open a tie game in the 5th inning, led by Charlie Youkilis, who went 2-for-2 with a double and made two standout defensive plays at second base. The M’s also received contributions from Cooper Maddex (2-for-3, three RBIs) and Cody Chittenden (2-for-4, two runs). Les Sollner hurled two scoreless innings.
For the D-Backs, Jasper Persson made the play of the game, throwing out a baserunner at the plate from center field. Lucas Parrett went 2-for-3 and Finn Shumway hit a double and tossed 1 and 2/3 shutout innings.
Cubs 10, Rangers 8 — Jude Willard went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Avery Peskin went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Tate Shackleton went 3-for-3 with three RBIs to power the Cubs. Declan McAteer and Zach Cornelius added a hit and RBI for the winners, while Abdullah Mulla scored two runs and Rhodes Tewksbury helped turn a game-ending double play.
Giants 7, Phillies 1 —Oscar Campbell, Lazlo Winn, Henry Levin, Jonas Jackson and JP Edwards contributed hits for the winners, while on the mound Jackson,Levin, Tato Narganes and Oscar Campbell combined for 11 strikeouts.
For the Phillies, David Sills plated Jack Devlin with an RBI single, Blake Noller earned two walks and notched his first stolen base of the season. Phillies catcher Bradley Krischer made a standout defensive play to tag out a Giants runner trying to steal home.
Giants 6, Rangers 2 — Charlie McIntosh pitched two scoreless innings and Henry Levin added a scoreless frame for the winners. Lazlo Winn and Oscar Campbell each had two hits and an RBI for the Giants, while Calvin Boehle added a hit and an RBI and Jonas Jackson added a hit for the winners.
Rangers 8, Cubs 6 — Wyatt Droege had a big game for the Rangers, cracking a game-winning double in the bottom of the 5th to cap a 3-for-3 day with two RBIs. Droege also hurled two innings and allowed just one run for the winners. Also for the Rangers, Cole Pritchard and Paxton King each tossed a scoreless inning. Austin Coleman reached base twice.
For the Cubs, RBIs came from Abdullah Mullah, Zach Cornelius, Tyler Feduska, Tate Shackleton, and Will Schluensen. Jude Willard added a clutch hit. On the mound, Feduska pitched two innings of one-run ball, and Tate Shackleton surrendered two runs in two innings.
MINORS AAA
Royals 4, Pirates 1 — Both teams shined on the mound. For the Pirates, Alex Supple, Stefan Sigg, and Ian Boley all turned in standout performances. The Royals were able to match through five innings, with Parker Caselli starting, and George Quist earning three key strikeouts to keep the bases loaded in the 4th.
The Royals finally broke it open in the top of the 6th, with leadoff double by Quist followed by a triple by Oliver Lynch pushing the eventual winning run over the plate. Lynch struck out the side to close it.
Cardinals 12, A’s 10 — Wells Lipner smacked two hits and Grey Robinson stroked a triple for the Cards. The A’s threw out a baserunner attempting to steal.
Giants 3, Pirates 2 — Burke Hall struck out six batters and Preston Rhodes turned an unassisted double play for the winners.
